Why Men Don't Like Smart, Strong, Successful Women

I know I'm courting controversy with a title like that. But before you get bent out of shape at my provocative title, do me a favor and read the article.

It's not a condemnation of women whatsoever. It's an observation that all good qualities -such as smart, strong and successful - come with bad qualities. We can see this in women's preference in men. A woman wants a man to be successful, but not a workaholic. She wants him to be charming, but not too flirtatious. She wants a guy who is sensitive, but not one who seems too weak. Well guess what? The tycoon will usually work until the nighttime, the charmer will attract other women, and the man who shares his problems with you will sometimes come across as needy.

We cannot date good qualities without bad qualities. They go together. The key to a successful relationship is learning to accept someone's bad qualities, and hoping that someone is willing to put up with ours. Until we do that – until we recognize that we're lucky to find someone to put up with us – the dating game will be a rough one indeed.

Please weigh in with your comments, all of which inspire me to learn more about dating and relating every single day.

Warmest Wishes,

Evan

Open Your Mind, Open Your Heart, Open To Love

I was at the first annual Matchmaker's Conference for a three day weekend. I was there to speak on a panel for dating coaches, discussing how we can help matchmakers and their clients succeed. The room was filled with nearly 100 people in the love industry, all of whom care deeply about connecting others.

Single people come to these big-hearted folks, serious about finding a relationship, and they open up their wallets wide. Matchmakers typically charge anywhere from three thousand to ten thousand dollars to make ten "matches" over the course of a year. And even though no matchmakers promise to deliver a spouse, the pressure is on them to deliver.

Which brings up an issue that I call "the Matchmaker's Dilemma".

Quickly:

1) Gonna be on the Tyra Banks Show later this month. Talking about "7 Ways to Keep Your Lover". A few of them are straight out of "Why You're Still Single", so that should be fun. Sign up to read the blog daily so you don't miss this momentous event.

2) Wrote this piece for Yahoo Personals, which echoes this month's dating tip about being too picky. It's called Setting The Bar Too High. Can't we all just hold hands and love one another? No? Well, I had to ask...

Two private clients share how a little private coaching opened up a world of possibilities in their love lives...

Dear Evan,

I absorbed every word you said on our last session. Now equipped with some decent photos, thanks to you, I decided to give it a test drive, on Yahoo Personals.

Well, thanks to your pro advice, I was OVERWHELMED with responses. In addition to all the emails/ responses, etc. I have 6 dates set for this week (I would have had more, but I am traveling this weekend). And, these gals are all in my target range –now, 40-46, all great looking and within a short distance from me.

Thanks for your help.

Best,

Mark

Hey Evan,

Just wanted to tell you that I went to dinner with one of the Match guys last night. The reason I feel I need to share this with you is because it was really the first time ever I felt truly confident and relaxed meeting someone for the first time. This I attribute to you. In the past I had always stressed over what I was going to wear, what to say (or what not to), how to act/react, and if there would be a second date. Last night I followed your simple but sound advice to just be myself and be in the moment. Okay, I still had to worry about what to wear because there is nothing about that in your blogs ;-) but my evening turned out to be an enjoyable one because I wasn't trying to follow all of the so-called dating rules.

So I would like to say thank you, I appreciate all of your patience with me. I realize I have much more to learn, but I also know I have come so far from where I was before.

Have a fantastic weekend, talk to you Tuesday.

All my best,

Lisa
